Wooden furniture for children - how to create an arrangement that stimulates child's development?

Arranging children’s space can be a real challenge. After all, children's rooms should be their private, aesthetic places to experiment, learn new things and experience all kinds of stimuli. That is why we would like to tell you how to decorate such spaces in accordance with the assumptions of two famous founders of schools of child pedagogy - Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner. We will also explain why they are close to our philosophy regarding equipping children's rooms and why wooden furniture will be great in interiors designed for children.

Responsible parents are well aware that arranging and equipping child's room is not as easy and obvious as it may seem. It is a process that requires delving into the psyche of our children and getting to know the specifics of their development.

Using the assumptions of Maria Montessori pedagogy and Waldorf education (its author is Rudolf Steiner) will allow us to create a safe, comfortable, aesthetic and stimulating space for children. These educational methods are extremely needed in the era of universal access to technology from an early age. Italian and Austrian pedagogy assume that the most important is learning through independent actions, creative activities and communing with nature.

Both educational systems are close to our hearts and our philosophy of designing and creating furniture for the youngest. We are the parents of two wonderful children who go to the Waldorf kindergarten. And because we want to practice the same kind of education at home, we create furniture that makes it possible. Therefore, the next entry on our blog will be devoted to this issue.

According to the guidelines of Steiner and Montessori children's room furniture should, on one hand, allow children to use their creativity and curiosity that lie dormant in them, and on the other hand be nice, functional and safe. Therefore, based on our own experience, we will advise you what furniture from the FRISK collection will work best in children's rooms. We will also answer the question why wooden furniture - in particular plywood furniture - is a very good choice when planning the arrangement and equipment of the rooms of the youngest household members. After all, thinking about wooden furniture let’s remember that it is not only about solid furniture made of solid wood, but about aesthetic and durable furniture made of high quality plywood.

Montessori method - learning by exploration and experience

Maria Montessori is an Italian doctor who created her own educational method. Its main premise is the free development of children through action. The Montessori method also assumes a departure from the negative aspects of typical school education, such as discouraging children from undertaking independent activities. Montessori believed that the environment played a key role in the development of the child. Interestingly and importantly, the doctor described children up to 6 years of age as explorers and children aged 6-12 as small people who begin to consciously perceive the world and operate with their imagination.

It is therefore appropriate to perceive the child's room as his own little "universe", which the toddler wants to discover and explore, and over time create himself. Therefore, before furnishing a room for a child, be aware that it will be a place where the toddler will begin to explore the world and learn ordinary but necessary activities, such as crawling, creeping, standing, leaning on furniture or sitting. The parents' task is to equip the room in such a way that it enables the children to learn and perform activities on their own.

Wooden furniture for children that we create follows the educational method of the Italian doctor. FRISK benches and mini bookcases facilitate storage and allow children to explore the environment by reaching and removing objects from the shelves by themselves. As a result, children are activated to take action, and thus can safely learn resourcefulness and practice motor skills.

The art of organizing

Another important element of the Montessori method is the fact that children learn and develop by maintaining order in their immediate surroundings. Of course, this is a long-term process that requires patience and instruction from parents. On the other hand, the storage space that we will arrange for our kids will definitely have an impact on learning how to organize things.

FRISK furniture pieces are tailored to the child's height and abilities. Thanks to this, they ensure that the youngest have access to individual items - the toddler can freely change the position of toys, and thus learn how to put them in their place after each play. We also made sure that our wooden furniture includes montessori shelf, drawers and cabinets.

Thanks to FRISK furniture and montessori shelf, keeping order in the children's room will be much easier, and more importantly - children will be able to freely learn to organize and sort items. Pieces of furniture that will facilitate this are our sideboards with vinyl boxes, which are ideal for storing books. Thanks to the practical compartments, the books will not fall over and their spines will be exposed, which will help the children find the books they are looking for at the moment.

Another indication of the Montessori method, related to ordering and storage, is taking care of the optimal number of items in the child's room. The best solution is to observe the toddler. It will allow us to find out which toys they child is interested in right now and which they do not pay attention to at all. The latter will of course prove excessive. What's more, a systematic change of toys (hiding those that the children are playing with now and pulling out those that we hid some time ago) will prevent the child from getting bored. And we will not have to buy more toys every few weeks.

We know and use this mechanism ourselves. Therefore, furniture from the FRISK collection allows you to create wall units with various types of storage compartments, at different levels - their layout can be arranged according to your preferences. And it is in the cabinets, located at the higher level, where we conveniently store some of our children's toys that they are not playing with at any given time.

Contact with nature - at home and away from home

These days when children can observe the world on the computer and smartphone screens, it is very important to cultivate longing for nature. The trend of returning to what is natural has for several years made us more consciously choose equipment for our apartments, rightly giving up what is artificial and not ecological. Therefore, wood in the form of plywood, from which we create our furniture, will work very well in a children's room. Plywood is a natural, but also solid material, which at the same time allows us to create furniture with interesting, sophisticated shapes. Thanks to this, FRISK furniture is wooden furniture for children, characterized by strength and a simple form that provides easy access to stored items. And what's more, thanks to its weight, our furniture is extremely stable. However, the openwork structure and rounded edges and corners make them not massive and overwhelming.

All color options are natural wood colors, and each of them can be successfully matched to the overall color concept of the child's room arrangement. What is also very important - we use ecological oils to finish the furniture, so we can be sure that children's room equipment is comfortable and safe.

The Waldorf method - a room conducive to creative expression

Waldorf pedagogy, created by the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, is the second educational method that we considered when designing our furniture for children. The main premise of his educational system is undeniable respect for individuality as well as the child's freedom. The child is the most important thing, not the curriculum or development itself. It is also very important to create a space that will allow the children to play creatively and explore and express their own fantasy. Steiner believes that the development of imagination in the later years of child development will turn into the ability to take initiative and in the desire to work and lead creative, adult life. It is important, therefore, that the accessibility of individual objects allows children to learn about the objects that intrigue them: previously unknown shapes, textures and materials. This will stimulate their creativity, which they should then be able to express in their room.

That is why, when creating FRISK furniture, we wanted it to be wooden furniture for children, which, apart from the storage function, would be an additional place for children to do artistic activities.

FRISK benches and low bookcases - tailored to the growth of the youngest - allow children to take a comfortable standing and sitting position to draw, paint, build, and then display their charming "works of art" and use them for fun. What's more, the attractive appearance of FIRSK furniture will allow us to build a sense of aesthetics for children, thanks to the fact that from an early age they will be able to commune with beautiful objects in their rooms.

Both Waldorf pedagogy and the Montessori method encourage children to take inspiration from nature and use such elements as chestnuts, twigs, cones and other "treasures" found during walks to make objects and toys that will teach them knowledge and respect for nature. At the same time, they will be objects that will not expose the children to receiving too much stimuli - as is the case with electronic toys.

Parents for parents

We ourselves are parents and the most important thing for us is the development of our children. Drawing on our own experience and observation, we decided to create furniture that allows children to easily learn and experience new things. In turn, the Montessori and Waldorf methods allowed us to develop FRISK furniture designs in such a way that they are a response to the assumptions and guidelines of two internationally recognized educators.
